Sourcing a 12v Live from a Vehicles Fuse Box
How to Source & Add a 12v Ignition Live Circuit from a Vehicles Fusebox
When installing an aftermarket stereo into certain vehicle types a 12v ignition live will need sourcing to the aftermarket wiring harness fly lead if you wish for the aftermarket stereo to be triggered on and off by the vehicles ignition key.
Best practice to do this is to route a 12v ignition live direct from the vehicles internal fusebox, to do this you will require a Multimeter to check for voltages & a fuse 'piggy back block' (as pictured). |
Check with the Multimeter to find a suitable circuit/location in the fuse box (ideally use a circuit not in use, but more often than not you will have to piggy back onto another circuit). Remove the fuse from its location (as pictured) & replace with the 'piggy back' connector (as pictured), have the original fuse in location 1 on the 'piggy back block', & the fuse for the 12v live you are routing to the stereo/radio in fuse location 2, once all fuses are in place & the fly lead is attached (preferably using bullet connectors) to the wiring harness, the stereo will now work on the vehicles ignition barrel when the key is inserted.

Or alternately (the easy option)
Either on the aftermarket vehicle wiring harness or the new aftermarket Stereo's ISO wiring harness, you can connect both the 12v live wires (yellow & red) with (usually) the bullet connectors on each wire together creating 1 circuit into 2, this makes the new stereo/radio 'instant live', so no longer controlled on/off using the ignition barrel, but using the on/off or (usually) Source button on front of the stereo/radio display. |
