How to Change a Car Battery
Car Battery Removal & Re-fitting Instructions
On the majority of cars the vehicles battery is located under the bonnet & is normally instantly visible & quite easy to get to. On certain vehicles the battery can be slightly hidden & obstructed by other components, these will need removing before gaining access to the battery.
With the bonnet open first check the condition of the old battery including any connectors & fitting brackets to ensure the work can be carried out. First remove the battery negative terminal & secure clear of the battery (in most cases here a 10mm spanner/socket will be required), now remove the positive terminal & also secure clear away from the battery. Next remove any clamps or brackets that are securing the battery into the vehicle (usually a 13mm or 10mm spanner/socket will be required), when removing or refitting the battery terminals or clamps, be careful not to 'short circuit' the terminals with any metal objects, such as spanners, brackets etc.Now the battery can removed from the vehicle, with the battery out of the car, inspect the battery tray to ensure there is nothing that could cause an obstruction such as: stones, grit, loose bolts etc. Next is to install the new battery into the vehicle & using the clamp or bracket removed previously secure into place, once secured refit the positive connector first, followed by the negative connector to complete the job. Please note, once the battery is removed anything electrical on the vehicle that is coded, such as the manufacturers stereo will need the security code inputting when the new battery is connected, this can be avoided by using a Power saver device whilst carrying out the work.
